Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! My name is Mrs. Nicole Sierzega and I am going to be the STREAM teacher this year. STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Math) is a new program at St. Damian. In this class students will work on projects, research data, plan and apply scientific methods to integrate science, technology, engineering, writing and mathematics to solve real world problems, and use logic and imagination to think critically. Students will be exposed to a variety of careers and associated college majors to stimulate contemplation of their future careers.
Starting at the pre-k level the students will build and create using blocks, tiles, clay, and play-doh and will continue up to middle school where students will learn coding skills, build models with various materials, and research and plan using the engineering process. The students will also be working on their writing skills. St. Damian has added ipads to our daily curriculum as well as a brand new computer lab!
Throughout the year, we will be doing crafts, games, and activities to emphasize Bible stories and the Catholic Church. These activities make the Bible stories and aspects of the Catholic Church more concrete and easier for the students to understand and is also a lot of fun.
Someone once said, “the only thing constant is change”. With new technological innovations, seemingly daily, some skills can quickly become obsolete. We need to understand that to be successful in the 21st Century will require us to be flexible. That’s why the ability to think critically, learn new concepts, and adapt quickly to new technologies is critical at the elementary school level. Our STREAM program at St. Damian will help each student be a creative and independent thinker. The skills they learn can be applied to their future education in high school and college and may even help steer them in the direction of their future career.

I’m looking forward to an amazing year!
